Welcome to Dog Angel...
If your dog demonstrates problem behaviour such as: - aggression
- jumping up
- compulsive habits
- separation anxiety
- persistent barking
- fears and phobias
- toileting problems
- pulling on the lead
- general naughtiness and disobedience
.. then you probably have a dog who has decided to take on the role of leader of your pack (i.e. your family or household). He or she is trying to look after you and is showing you who is in charge. It is a dog's natural instinct to live in a pack and every pack needs a leader. But if there is no clear human leader (in the dog's eyes) he or she will take on the task themselves. This is a very big responsibility and a very stressful job. You need to swap roles with your dog in order to eliminate unwanted behaviour. ~x~ I can teach you the principles of Amichien BondingĀ®, a method of canine communication, originally developed by Jan Fennell, author of several books including The Dog Listener and Seven Ages of Your Dog. She has also made TV programmes and a DVD called The Dog Listener. Jan's inspiration came from Monty Roberts, The Horse Whisperer. He learnt to communicate with horses by copying their behaviour in the wild. Jan decided the same could be done with dogs by copying the way wolves communicate with each other and has created a method, which, when followed correctly, can revolutionise the human-dog relationship and allow the dog to be a dog again - one of the pack rather than the leader. ~x~ This method involves communicating with your dog(s) in a way they will understand and which demonstrates that you are the leader of your pack. It relies on body language, gestures, eye contact, calm reactions and tone of voice. You will gain your dog's respect and reduce stress - yours and the dog's! It is an alternative to conventional dog training with no need for gadgets. There are 4 key areas where you need to demonstrate good leadership: feeding time, going for a walk (or as the dog sees it) going on a hunt, dealing with danger and establishing status within the pack. ~x~ You will need to permanently change some of the everyday things you do with your dog and some of these may be hard habits to break but with patience, persistence and consistency, you will have a happier relationship with your dog within a matter of days which will continue for the rest of their life. But the dog's individual personality and character won't change, they will still be the dog you love! ~x~ Once you have applied the basic steps and built the foundation so that your dog accepts you as leader, there is no reason why you couldn't go on to other activities with your dog: showing, obedience, agility, flyball, heelwork to music, gundog trials - the possibilities are endless but ... IT'S ALL UP TO YOU!
